Pixelation - You don't want it!

With the many different sizes of computer monitors out there, you're probably starting to wonder just how common yours is. Some computer monitors have odd resolutions like 1340x924 that make it difficult to find wallpapers of the appropriate size. You're probably thinking "can't I just right click and set the image as my background?" Well, you can. But you face an issue known as pixelation. This occurs when you attempt to fit an image that is too large or too small into a size that it doesn't fit in. For example, if you have a 4x3 piece of paper, in order to fit it into a 4x5 box, you would need to stretch it. This results is fuzzy images that are generally annoying to look at. So the solution to this problem is to find wallpapers and backgrounds that are made to the exact dimensions of your screen. It's actually simpler to do this than you may first realize.

Knowing Your Resolution

Before you can begin looking for wallpapers, you need to know the right resolution of your screen. To do this, right click on your background and select "Screen Resolution" in Windows 7. Users of Windows Vista and XP click here. Take note of the resolution and exit the windows.

Wallpaper Sites

If you want to find images that have been specifically made to be computer wallpapers, than your best bet is to visit a wallpaper site. There is no shortage of these sites on the internet. Here are some of my favorites that allow you to select custom resolutions before downloading:

On these sites, you will need to select the proper resolution before looking for and downloading a wallpaper. Remember that not every wallpaper is available in your resolution, so check first.

The Image Search Method

This method is a lot easier than the previous. In order to download the right wallpaper, go to Google Images: http://www.google.com/images. Then, do an "Advanced Image Search." About halfway down the page, you will notice "Exact Size." On the right, click "use my desktop size." It will fill in the boxes with the dimensions of your screen. Now, enter a search term and click search.

Then, you can browse and save any of the images that appear. And all of them will be the exact right size!
